Best MDF Base for Lippan Art: Size, Thickness and Prep Guide
Choosing an MDF base for lippan art? Learn which size, shape and thickness to pick, how to prep the board, and where to buy laser-cut MDF bases online in India.

Lippan art (the traditional mud-and-mirror work from Kutch) looks best on a base that is flat, rigid and smooth. That is why most artists today work on MDF boards instead of plywood or cardboard. Here is a simple guide to picking the right MDF base for lippan art and getting it ready before you start.
Why MDF works so well for lippan art
It stays flat. MDF has no grain, so it does not warp as easily as thin plywood when the clay dries.
The surface is smooth. Paint and clay grip evenly, and the base colour looks clean around the mirrors.
Clean, laser-cut edges. Circles, hexagons and shapes come out perfectly even, which matters for symmetric mandala-style lippan designs.
Which shape should you choose?
Round circles are the classic choice for mandala-style lippan. Our Round MDF Circles come from 2 inch up to 36 inch.
Hexagon bases give a modern look and work well in sets on a wall. See the Hexagon MDF Craft Base.
Square boards suit geometric patterns and name boards. Try the Square MDF Board (Pack of 4).
Clock bases have a centre hole, so you can turn your lippan piece into a working wall clock with the Round MDF Clock Base.
What size is right?
6 to 8 inch: coasters, small gifts and practice pieces.
10 to 12 inch: the most popular size for wall plates and return gifts.
14 to 18 inch: statement wall pieces with more detailed borders.
20 inch and above: large living-room art. Plan your pattern on paper first.
3.3 mm or 5.5 mm thickness?
3.3 mm is light and economical. It is great up to about 10 to 12 inches and for pieces you will gift or ship.
5.5 mm feels sturdier and stays flatter on larger sizes. Choose it for 12 inches and above, or for clocks and heavy clay work.
How to prepare the MDF base
Sand lightly with 220-grit paper, especially the edges.
Seal or prime the board. A coat of white primer or gesso stops the MDF from soaking up water from the clay. (Our circles are also available pre-primed.)
Paint the base colour and let it dry fully.
Draw your design with a pencil and compass before applying clay.
Work in sections so the clay does not dry before you press in the mirrors.
