MDF Circles for Resin Art: How to Choose and Prepare Them
Using MDF circles for resin art? Learn the best sizes and thickness, how to seal MDF so resin does not bubble, plus tips for clocks, coasters and big wall art.

MDF circles are one of the easiest bases for resin art. They are flat, affordable and come in every size you need, from coasters to big wall pieces. The key is choosing the right thickness and sealing the board properly before you pour.
Choosing the right MDF circle
Coasters: 4 inch circles in 3.3 mm, or ready-made shapes like our Turtle MDF Coaster Blanks.
Trays and small wall art: 8 to 12 inch circles.
Clocks: use a base with a centre hole, like the Round MDF Clock Base.
Large geode or ocean pours: 14 inch and above in 5.5 mm, which resists bending under the weight of the resin.
All sizes from 2 to 36 inch are available on our Round MDF Circles page, plain or with white primer.
Always seal MDF before pouring resin
MDF is porous. If you pour resin straight onto raw board, air escapes from the surface and you get bubbles and dull patches. To avoid this:
Sand lightly with 220-grit paper and wipe off the dust.
Seal both sides with a thin coat of resin, PVA glue or a sealing primer. Sealing the back also helps stop warping.
Let the seal cure fully before the main pour.
Pouring tips
Work on a level surface. Check with a spirit level, because resin always flows to the low side.
Tape the back edge so drips are easy to clean.
Use a heat gun or torch briefly to pop surface bubbles.
Cover the piece while it cures to keep dust off.
Finishing the edges
For a neat edge, either let the resin drip over and sand the drips once cured, or paint the edge with acrylic before the final coat.
